air trip

In recent years, as well as recent months, airline trip rules have changed.  If you are planning on flying, you will find that most of these changes have occurred right at airports, namely airport security checkpoints.  If you are about to head off to catch a flight, whether you leave tomorrow or in two weeks, it is advised that you famialrize yourself with these new air travel rules, namely the ones that are enforced at airport security checkpoints.

When it comes to airport security checkpoints, there are many passengers who only think of one checkpoint, but the reality is that there are actually three. When registering for seating on the plane will be your first checkpoint. This is the time when you will be presented with your boarding passes and when you must hand over the luggage that you would like checked.  In addition to handing over your plane tickets or requesting your boarding passes, you will need to show the proper forms of identification. These items most commonly include a driver’s license or a government issued identification card.

Once you have received all of your boarding passes, for all of your flights, you will need to hand over your luggage that you will be leaving below in the plane. These bags are commonly referred to as checked baggage or checked luggage.  As with your carryon luggage, your checked baggage will need to be checked for prohibited items. In the past, only a small number of bags were hand checked, but now almost all are.  Many of these checks are quick look-overs, but you may be subject to a random, extensive search. The searches includes looking at all the baggage compartments.

When you have been cleared to the next stage, you will need to go through the main airport security checkpoints. This point is where you will be required to have your carryon luggage scanned by an x-ray machine. You will also need to walk through a metal detector. In the past, only random travelers were asked to remove their shoes for checking. At the current time, all air travelers, with the exception of those with a disability or hindering medical condition, are required to remove their shoes. Your shoes will be x-rayed, along with the rest of your carryon luggage.

By familiarizing yourself with the items that are banned aboard an airplane, including items that are only prohibited from being stored in your carryon luggage, an unnecessary incident could be prevented. In the event that you are found carrying a prohibited item, certain steps will be taken. Depending on the item in question, you may be required to return the item to you car, discard of it, mail it to your home, or turn it over to airport security. To shorten delays, make certain you do not bring along with you any prohibited items that could cause you to miss your flight.

Once you have been cleared at the main security checkpoint, you will need to go through one more security checkpoint. This is the final step before being able to board your airplane. You will require to present your boarding pass just after waiting in line to be attended.  As this time you may need to show your identification again; however, it isn’t always necessary. Most travelers are easily able to board their airplane, but you may be pulled aside in the event that you are acting suspicious or drawing unwanted attention to yourself. That is why it is best that you stay calm during all airport checkpoints, including the final boarding stage.

Perhaps, the best way to ensure that your next flight is as pleasant as it can be is to follow all travel requirements rules. It’s best to know these rules before leaving to the airport, this way you will make sure you’ll board your plane with minimal delays.

Community colleges are a great choice for many students who either are interested in a technical type program or who want to save some money the first two years of college. But there are some little known problems that can occur with those students wishing to transfer to a four year college after a community college.

Jay Matthews, and education columnist for the Washington Post, highlighted some of those problems in an article entitled Community College Transfer Mess. One particular problem, that I have also seen among students with whom I work, is the failure of four year institutions to fully recognize all of the work done at the two year college. A related problem is that the four year institutions will often have requirements for a particular major that mandates a student take the course at the four year college and will not fully recognize a similar course taken at the community college.

There are also often concerns about financial aid for students transferring to a four year college since some four year colleges will reserve their best aid for incoming freshman, leaving less aid for transfer students. The result is that the last two years of college can often cost more than they would have if the student had started at the four year college initially. This offsets some, or all, of the savings a student receives from initially attending a community college. The New York Times also an article today discussing the problems with getting loans that some students at community colleges are having.

I have written about many of these issues in my college transfer help article. Transferring from one college to another can work great for some students but like most things related to college admissions, you need to know all of the issues before making a choice.

Wake Forest University has announced that they are going test optional beginning with the freshman class of 2009. While I have reported on a number of liberal arts colleges that have recently gone test optional, this news is important because Wake Forest is the highest ranked national university to adopt a test optional admissions standard. US News currently ranks Wake Forest as number 30 on the list of national universities. Although you know that I don’t put faith in arbitrary rankings, few would dispute that Wake Forest is a top university.

One of the arguments in the past has been that liberal arts colleges can go test optional because they don’t have as many applicants, but that the national universities don’t have the resources to evaluate all of their applicants. Wake Forest has announced that they will be adding 20% to their admissions staff to better evaluate their applicants and to encourage underrepresented students to apply to Wake.

Scott Jaschik at Inside Higher Ed has an excellent article about some of the discussions that Wake Forest had on whether to go test optional. Scott also reviews this years admissions results at Worcester Polytechnic University which last year became the first selective science school to go test optional.

I am sometimes asked if students need to take both the SAT and ACT and the quick answer is no. A student only needs to take one standardized test for college admissions. The question then becomes, which test.

All students should take at least one practice test of the SAT and ACT. The College Board and ACT each offer a free practice test for students to take. The practice test should be taken under standard testing procedures to get the best estimate of your score. After taking each test the student should consider on which test they had the best score and focus their studies on that test. To compare the scores on the two tests, look at one of the comparison tables available.

There are other issues and some of those are reviewed at our page on the SAT or ACT.

School is almost out for summer, which is great unless you are graduating from high school and you do not have a plan of what you will be doing next. Maybe you never finished figuring it all out yet, just watched as your friends applied to colleges and universities or joined the military. Or maybe you do not plan on going to college, which is fine as it is not for everyone. Plus you can find jobs without a college degree, many times ones where you can earn a decent living.

However, even if you do not plan on attending a regular or more traditional college you should still not rule out getting some career training or going to a trade school. If you plan on only getting a high school diploma chances are pretty good you will not make a decent living unless you find a job where you can learn some skills and the employer will teach you.

If you think career training or attending a trade school might be just what you need, guess what? It is not too late to apply! Unlike many traditional colleges that you have to apply for way in advance, you may be able to sign up for a career school or a college that offers some form of a career training program and get started relatively quickly.

Of course if you did just graduate high school or will be you may want to take off some well deserved time and spend the summer with your friends, which is very understandable. But don’t let months turn into years and years turn into decades without a plan to find a decent paying career. In only a little bit of time you can contact several schools with career training options right now and get some ideas of what types of opportunities are available.

There are so many jobs available now that do not require a four year degree, but that do require some form of education and which pay a decent wage. Some examples of jobs in demand that you can get training for in less then four years, maybe even less then two year, are in the medical fields. Think of all the assistants and techs who work in hospitals and doctors and dentists offices. Or if the medical field is not your cup of tea what about computer or office related careers. Many of those type training programs can be completed in just months!

So enjoy your summer, but don’t put off contacting some career schools to find out what they have to offer.

We are beginning a 3-part series on the benefits of pursuing an online associate degree.

Getting a distance learning degree from a Christian College can be a mixed blessing in many cases. If you are considering a graduate degree or higher, you will want to strongly consider enrolling in a more traditional, oncampus college setting. Getting your associate degree online, however, is something you should strongly consider. This can be especially true when seeking to earn a degree from a Chrisitian college.  After all, one of the objectives of an associates degree is to get many of your basic courses out of the way. Getting an online associate degree does that, while giving you needed flexibility. If you are a working professional, pursuing your associates degree online maybe the best way for you to get started with your education. Not only will it save you money, but it will allow you to fit class into your otherwise busy schedule.

Look for the next part in a few day.

Distance learning college is much different from what it used to be some time back. There is a definite change in the public opinion regarding accredited distance learning. Gone are the days when people who got education in this way were not given due acclamation. Recent reports indicate that now executives, trained with the help of distance learning online, are also getting highly paid jobs.

No Need To Regret

This is a very good news for you if you feel that your progress is hindered because of lack of a particular degree. Instead of lamenting about non availability of proper education, you can join a distance learning college now. You will be able to earn required degree while still continuing with your current job. So, the opportunity is knocking at your doorstep. It is now up to you how you can make the most of it.

The very first thing that you need to do in the process is to pick the right college that offers particular course you are looking for. Once you find it, submit your application to join online classes immediately. However, keep in mind that online education requires a different kind of mindset as there is no one to personally monitor your activities. Definitely, you should have a high level of commitment to get desired results from distance teaching.

One more advantage of joining a distance learning college is that you get more pleasure after completing your education as compared to finishing your education from traditional college. All in all, online study is a great gift of modern technology and you should not miss this opportunity to improve the quality of your life.
