When people study dreams one of the areas of focus is lucid dreaming.  In a lucid dream a person is aware that they’re dreaming.  It’s also called a conscious stream because the conscious mind is active.  Lucid dreams can be changed as they happen.  People can be placed into the dream, or the entire plot altered.  Lucid dreams can seem almost real, depending on how self-aware the person is during the dream.

One type of lucid dream that has been categorized when people study dreams is the dream initiated lucid dream.  It begins as a normal dream.  Something makes the sleeper aware that it’s a dream.

The other main category of lucid dreaming is the wake initiated lucid dream.  This is when a person falls asleep directly into a lucid dream.  There is no lapse of consciousness.  In essence the person is never wholly asleep.

A woman who decided to study dreams was Celia Green.  In fact she studied lucid dreams in 1968.  And she analyzed all the different aspects of these dreams.  She was the first to conclude they were not like other dreams.  She tied REM sleep to lucid dreaming.  That’s when the eyes rapidly move while the person sleeps.

Like other people who study dreams, Celia was also interested in the false awakening.  This is when people think they’ve woken up.  The person, however, is still dreaming.  A woman tells of dreaming that she was being chased by a pack of dogs.  Just as they pounced she woke safe in bed.  Suddenly a pack of dogs burst into the room, jumping on her.  She screamed, and then really woke up.  Celia thought there was some connection between lucid dreams and false awakening.  Because the conscious mind is active in a lucid dream it moves the body to awaken and take action, often during a stressful period of the dream.

Another person who wanted to study dreams was Norman Malcolm.  His book was Dreaming, written in 1959.  He connected the fact that eye movements within dreams cause the physical eye to move with lucidity in dreams.  His theory wasn’t proven until the 1970s in which a study involved a subject sending signals to the waking world from with in his dream.  He did this with predetermined eye movements.
